We might be a bit biased, but we think so.

According to the Centers for Disease and Control Road, road related incidents (regardless of transit mode – car, walking, bicycle, motorbike) are the leading cause of non-natural death for healthy U.S. citizens residing or traveling abroad. They are also a leading cause of death in the United States for people aged 1–54. According to the World Health Organization, the rate of road-related accidents continues to grow amongst foreign visitors.

Knowing this, we find it odd that Americans, for example, can freely drive in 174 countries around the world without any need for understanding local road environments. Today, all that’s necessary to drive abroad is a filled-out $20 application. Similarly, we find it odd that there’s no comprehensive understanding on how to effectively and safely get around by foot, bicycle or with public transit in any country where foreigners are at risk.

Taking only a few minutes and a few dollars to learn the road conditions before travelling can teach you something, even a thing or two, that might help you avoid risk and even reduce large and unnecessary expenses (medical, vehicle damage, and driving tickets).

As the phrase goes, not investing in prior education is penny wise, pound foolish. We believe Tripiamo is an investment that’s well worthwhile.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out our customer reviews at the bottom of our home page.

Costs for road accidents can vary but are generally bucketed into three categories: Medical, Property Damage and Traffic Violations. While private insurers pay about half of all accident costs, individual crash victims still pay 26%.

Medical – The average costs for:

  • A slight injury crash: $1,036 in the EU, $7,500 in the USA
  • A serious injury crash: $10,229 in the EU, $61,600 in the USA
  • Crashes with fatalities:$9,904 in the EU, $1,130,000 in the USA

Property Damage – Generally speaking 72% of crashes result in property damage, which equate to the below average costs:

  • A slight injury crash:$4,323 in the EU, $11,900 in USA
  • A serious injury crash:$10,498, in the EU, $21,000 in the USA
  • Crashes with fatalities:$10,805 in the EU, $65,000 in the USA

Traffic Violations:
In certain markets foreigners are expected to be three times more likely to receive a fine for traffic offenses. Although every country has a different set of rules around speed limits, drunk driving, jaywalking, using a cell-phone, not wearing a seatbelt or a helmet and other traffic violations, tickets can vary in a range of fine amounts from just $35 to $750 per ticket across Europe. Receiving a ticket, in some instances, can even revoke driving permits in the future.

*The above mentioned costs are examples quoted from various studies and sources. Tripiamo is not liable for any of the above mentioned data in the case you are involved in an accident or receive a fine.
